Chapter Twenty-Nine

When Haven and Meredith walked into the pub another meeting was in full swing. A man Haven recognised from the night before jerked an accusing thumb in his direction.

‘This all started with him .’ The emphasis on the last word came with so much derision that it was almost a weapon.

Haven took a step towards the group. A muscle twitched along his jaw. He was done with being nice.

But Meredith put her hand on his arm and he bit back his words.

‘Sit down,’ she said softly. ‘Don’t give them a reason to take their prejudice out on you. We both know there’s something going on here, and they’re desperate to pin the blame on someone.’

She was right, of course. They took up the seats in their usual spot. Haven scrunched two beer mats into a ball and stuffed them into an empty glass on the next table.

‘I need to find Rafferty,’ he said, his anger deflating as quickly as it had risen. His hair fell over his face as he leaned across the table. ‘Sebastian was right. Rafferty is in trouble. I don’t know how or what, but I’m fucking well going to find out.’

Meredith met his gaze. ‘I’m going to tell you something now and I want you to listen without interrupting, because I’m not sure I’ll get it all out if you do.’

There was something haunted in her eyes. The same look he’d seen earlier. A shadow that took away some of the light.

After she finished he steepled his fingertips under his chin and mulled over her words. ‘So you’re telling me Amelia and Grace knew about what you saw in the well. Are you sure?’

She nodded. ‘Amelia tried to hide it. Said it was only the sun shining on the water. But Grace wouldn’t look at me. She was scared, Haven.’

‘Did you tell anyone?’ He traced a groove on the tabletop with one finger, tried to absorb the chilling nature of her words.

‘I was a little kid. Who was I going to tell? And anyway, I knew I shouldn’t have been where I was, so I kept quiet.’

Meredith glanced over his shoulder. A smile broke on her lips. Rosa appeared and set two drinks in front of them. She had a cloth in her hand and began to wipe the tabletop even though it was clean.

‘I don’t like what I’m hearing over there.’ Her gaze flicked in the direction of the group huddled by the fire. ‘Be careful.’

‘Are they threatening us?’ Haven asked. If that was the case they were about to see just how pissed off he really was. If Meredith hadn’t stopped him they would have found out already.

‘No, not you,’ Rosa said. She took two beer mats from her apron pocket and placed them on the table. Playing for time. ‘It’s the Hendersons.’

‘They’d go after a boy and two older women?’ His anger resurfaced, not the hot and feral kind, but the one that brooded in dark places, the one he sometimes turned on himself.
